Bias creates imbalance

June 23, 2023

The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him. Proverbs 11:1

As living stones, a Holy People, one body, one building, we are to avoid hypocrisy and double standards.

“Why do you judge your brother? Or why do you treat him with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Romans 14:10,12

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2“Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” Mark 4:24-25“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:37-38

“‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” Matthew 5:21-22

“‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” Matthew 5:27-29

When part of the body of Christ celebrates what God detests perhaps it’s best to lose that one part on behalf of the whole.

““The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.” Luke 16:16-17

“If you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:8-10,12-13

“For God does not show favoritism. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” Romans 2:11-13

I’m a sinner. Don’t celebrate my sinfulness; don’t give the devil a foothold. Turn me away from the demons that plague me. This should be true for all of us, no matter what causes us to stumble. Glorification of sin benefits neither the sinner nor God’s kingdom.

Let us look at ourselves wholly, with love, without prejudice. Let God’s judgment prevail.

Father, Teach us to walk in your ways. Keep us on your right path. Give us wisdom to discern the truth of your words. Amen.
